Novice Introduction To The Futures Trade

A few years ago, the futures trade would not even have been considered an option by many investors, it was too risky, they didn’t really understand it, and it was hedged in by regulations that looked really complex. However, there has been a shift in mindset due partially to the increase in online brokers and the availability of information, and access to what were previously deemed sacrosanct portals by some. Experienced and novice investors alike have started to show a lot more interest in the futures trade.

Like any other investment, the futures trade contains a fairly high element of risk. And online futures trading isn’t any different, in that the accessibility and convenience of not even having to leave home to trade, tends to make some regard trading more like a gambling option than a genuine investment opportunity. This can be a costly mistake, and there are a few steps you should take when starting out to make sure you don’t just become another victim in the trading jungle.

Futures contracts

Futures contracts are derivatives that are bought or sold on a futures exchange. These contracts are set up to buy or sell a specific commodity at a predetermined price on a future predetermined date. The intrinsic assets can be any commodities or financial instruments. The date on which the contract terminates is the delivery date. However, where some traders get confused with the futures trade is that they don’t grasp that they are not actually buying the commodity. The buying and selling of the commodity is between the producer of the commodity and the acquirer (the person who needs the commodity). The futures trader is trading on whether the predetermined price will go up or down and whether it is a good trade to buy the contract and then resell if the price rises, to make a profit from the purchase price.

What type of trader are you?

You will need to make a few decisions at the start of your trading business. Are you going to be a day trader or do you plan on being a long term investor? To some degree these decisions will be dictated by the amount of time and capital you have available to trade. Day traders need to spend a lot of time at their computers as the whole premise of day trading as the name indicates is that all transactions are conducted during a day period and closed down before the end of the trading day. You need to be constantly alert and checking the market for changes, it helps if you are comfortable with making split second decisions and having good trading systems and strategies in place go a long way toward helping in the success of your business.

If you prefer the long term option, then you don’t need to keep checking your accounts every hour, because you are not looking for short term trends, which could get in the way of your bigger picture. Don’t put yourself in the way of temptation – sometimes the short term offers are very hard to resist, but keep in mind they could harm your long term plans should you get drawn in.
Budget wisely

Don’t gamble with the household budget, work out how much money you can spend and stick with it. If you don’t, you really can turn into an addicted gambler trying to recoup your losses. It’s a good idea for beginners to start with mini-futures. Like the Kenny Rodger song says “know when to hold em’ know when to fold em’ and know when to walk away”
