Benefit From The Forex Futures Market

Day in, day out, and year round, individual traders and financial institutions are getting to benefit from the Forex futures market, by exchanging multiple currencies using the foreign exchange. The Forex is now recognised as the largest liquid market in the world, and naturally people are looking to see how they can benefit from the Forex futures market for themselves.

When you buy or sell currency through the foreign exchange you are trading in the Forex spot market. Basically it means one currency is being exchanged for a different one at the time of the trade. But there is more than one method to trade currency.

Forex futures are different to the spot market method of trading currencies. What happens in the futures market is that traders are allowed to enter into agreements to buy or sell currencies that have been allocated a certain date and specific exchange rate. Admittedly there are some similarities between Forex futures and the spot market, but there are also some distinct differences. Some traders find it more beneficial because of the differences to trade in Forex futures rather than the spot market.

Spreads

One of the first things you can do is to look at the different spreads. Forex futures spreads tend to be much smaller than those within the spot market. You do pay a small commission when you are trading futures, but ultimately the costs work out about the same. However it is worth looking at both options and do the math to see if you can cut costs.

Interest rates

Examine the costs associated with the interest rates. When you are trading currencies, money is either earned or paid according to the different interest rates of the traded currency. For example with the spot market, when you owe money, you pay more than the amount you get in return when you are owed. Plus there are occasions that you can be charged additional fees. When trading in Forex futures, the amount you are owed and the amount you are required to pay in the same transaction are equal.

Transparency

You need to understand differences in transparency between the spot market and futures market. Whilst there is no argument that the spot market is much larger compared to the Forex futures market, in reality the spot Forex is a very fragmented market. There are many different parties involved with varying access to information and prices. Another point to keep in mind that when you trade spot Forex you are actually trading against the broker, as they take the opposite side to the trade you make. This isn’t necessarily unethical, but it does open the doors for those that are less than honest.

However, it is acknowledged, Forex futures are traded across several exchanges. The advantage here is that you are not trading against the broker, as you would be with the spot market. In addition traders receive accurate statistical information because the trading is through centralised exchanges.

Hedging

By using the Forex futures market you are giving yourself the opportunity to indulge in hedging against currency fluctuation. If, for example you were trading overseas as opposed to your own country, you could set up a futures contract for the relevant currency pair. This can protect you against possible losses from currency trading rate changes. As can be seen there are a number of ways to benefit from the Forex futures market.
